Building a balanced lineup: positional scarcity and roster construction

It's tempting to build a lineup by sorting a projection column top to bottom and taking the names off the top. It feels rigorous. It's also one of the most common ways to end up with an unbalanced roster that looks great on paper and underdelivers in practice.

A lineup is a structure with constraints, positions to fill, and often a limited budget of roster resources. The interesting work happens at the margins, where scarcity and value collide.

Positional scarcity

Not every position is equally deep. In most formats, a handful of positions have a steep drop-off after the top few options, while others are flat, dozens of roughly interchangeable choices. Spending your premium resources on a scarce position, then filling flat positions with value, tends to produce a stronger overall roster than paying up everywhere.

Correlation and game environment

Players don't perform in isolation. Teammates in a high-scoring game can lift each other; a slow, low-event game can suppress an entire group. Thinking about the game environment, expected pace and total activity, helps you understand why two similar projections might carry different upside.

You don't need to overcomplicate this. Even a light awareness of which games are likely to be busy versus quiet gives you an edge over sorting a single column.
